`AL ANDALUS`
This series of paintings are a personal response to the Alhambra Palace in Andalucia, Spain.

What interests me is the idea of the Palace being a representation of `Paradise`, an earthly `Garden of Eden`. I have taken realistic elements of the Palace and imposed on them

some imaginary and symbolic content.  It was my intention that the paintings have a dreamlike `unearthly` quality.  The many fountains of the Alhambra have been transformed in the paintings into a vessel that represents and honours the feminine, so often denied an equal place in the culture.  The painting `Submerged` is inspired by an outdoor theatre in the Generalife Gardens

Colour is important in my paintings; I build successive layers of transparent glazes of oil paint and glazing medium, which results in paintings with more depth and vibrancy of colour.  The layering process only ends when I feel the painting has achieved a certain `resonance` that brings it to life.
